Yohimbe is the only herb listed in the Physician's Desk Reference as supporting sexual function. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Yohimbine (the active ingredient in Yohimbe) as the only plant-derived treatment for impotence years before Viagra® came along.
Called "herbal Viagra®" by the February 1999 edition of Environmental Nutrition, yohimbe's power comes from a combination of alkaloids. The alkaloid yohimbine blocks alpha-2-adrenergic nerve activity, which normally constricts the blood vessels. By blocking this nerve activity, vessels are allowed to dilate. The result is that yohimbe increases blood flow while reducing blood pressure. Increased blood flow enhances a man's ability to achieve and maintain erection.
Research
A recent review of more than half a dozen well-controlled clinical trials showed yohimbe more effective than placebo on treating erectile dysfunction of both physical and psychological origin
Researchers in a Stanford University study isolated the exact level of yohimbe from the bark of an African tree long reputed to be an aphrodisiac. This study found subjects experienced a 90 percent increase in sexual desire in less than one hour.
In a double-blind study conducted for the United States Veterans Adminstration; 182 men with erectile dysfunction took 42 mg of oral yohimbine hcl daily. The subjects' health problems included diabetes and cardiovascular problems, both of which diminish circulation. Even with those serious conditions, 34% reported full restoration of sexual function within one month, and another 24% reported partial response. As reported in the medical journal Urology,
subjects in the study experienced the maximal effect of the yohimbe within 4-6 weeks.
Yohimbe also works for men who have some psychological reason for their inability to achieve or maintain an erection. In a double-blind study of 48 men with psychogenic impotence, 46 percent of the men reported improvement in sexual functioning. The conclusion of this study, reported in the British medical journal Lancet, was that yohimbe standardized to the range at or slightly below prescription yohimbine hcl levels, could be a safe adjunct to sex and marital therapy for improving sexual satisfaction.
A subject in one study reported that not only was his sex life improving, so was his narcolepsy. In a follow-up study, seven out of eight people were able to stay awake for a normal eight-hour shift. Study author Virgil Wooten, M.D. said yohimbe gives promise of being more effective than the leading prescribed treatment for narcolepsy, with an added benefit worth staying awake for.¹
